Letter to BBFC

BBFC research

"In order to protect children from unsuitable and even harmful content in films and videos and to give consumers information they might need about a particular film or video before deciding whether or not to view it, the BBFC examines and age rates films and videos before they are released. This independent scrutiny prior to release ensures the highest possible level of protection and empowerment.
We watch films and videos all the way through and award an age rating and insight to each one. We reach an age rating by applying the standards and criteria contained in our Classification Guidelines which can be downloaded below.
Typically, two examiners view a film for theatrical release. In most cases a Senior Examiner will confirm the examiners’ recommendation. But if the Examiners are in any doubt or fail to agree, or if important policy issues are involved, the work may be seen by other members of the Board up to, and including, the Director and Presidential team. Occasionally we need to take specialist advice about the legal acceptability of film content or its potential for harm.
The same process exists for DVDs and Blu-rays though generally these are seen by one Examiner. However, opinions from other Examiners may be required for more difficult works.
We look at issues such as discrimination, drugs, horror, dangerous and easily imitable behaviour, language, nudity, sex, and violence when making decisions. The theme of the work is also an important consideration. We also consider context, the tone and likely impact of a work on the potential audience.
The release format of a work has an impact on classification. Our decisions on the age rating of DVDs and Blu-rays can occasionally be stricter than at the cinema because there is a higher risk of underage viewing in the home and a greater potential for watching scenes out of context."

Feedback on my 6 ideas

Charlie Hall-
Feedback on the 'The River Cam' Pitch:

Like the initial idea of the documentary film and think the pitch could m be improved slightly to then make a better final film. Things such as:
- Filming other punters
- Following a journey of one punter, eg the tours one punter takes each day or over the course of a week.
- Filming some time-lapse shots to use as cutaways.
- Cutaways of colleges, parts of town that are well known.
- People walking around town, ask them their opinion on the punts and the punting business.

Sophie-

I like idea of the documentary overall but there are some minor things that could be added, such as filming a range of other punters getting different views of it, cutaways of different places around the location or just people walking in general around, or maybe follow one of the punters to see what happens.

Based on feedback, how can I improve my initial idea?
In able to improve my ideas i need to show a diverse group of people giving their own personal view on the river from punters, to touts, to managers. I also need to show the life briefly not on the river so that the audience can see the different between the river and city life. A lot of the feedback included more cutaways so that the viewer doesn't get bored of someone talking throughout the whole shot. I will include cutaways such as: tour guides punting past, touts spinning boards, people walking past ect. I thin going back to Charlies point, I need to show places that are well know in cambridge so that the place is recognisable; the market square, st mary's church, 3 red telephone boxes. I think by placing these elements into my documentary I will make a final video that will look good and be liked by the viewers.

Using Sound for film

When finding sound on the internet for film, if it will be shown on youtube or any public site it needs to be royalty free (legal for copyright) I have found a website called 'bensound.com' and it says when downloading a song i will need to credit the website owner in my credits at the end of the film.

Recce Report

The river Cam

Mathematical Bridge

The Bridge of Sighs

I will be filming along the river cam from Quay side all the way to Mill Pond.

Kings Parade

Also filming along Kings Parade (Touts)

Risk Assessment

TRIPOD

Potential Hazards & Safety Risks: Because I will be filming on a boat (punt) it could potentially be knocked and fall in the water. It could be knocked when filming an interview on a busy street.
I will duck tape the tripods legs to the duck boards of the boat so that there is no chance of the Tripod falling in water with or without the camera secured to the top. Make sure I find a quiet-ish place to film so that no one knocks the tripod or put tape around the tripod so it is clearly shown that there is filming in progress which would be noticed by the public.

CAMERA

Potential Hazards & Safety Risks: It could potentially fall into the river whiles filming on a boat. The camera could get wet when filming in bad weather conditions. Could potentially be dropped due to weather conditions.
Example of safe working: Make sure that i am constantly holding the camera with the strap around my neck to prevent it falling in water; when not filming i will put the camera back in its case. Make sure i will carry an umbrella with me for unexpected rain to prevent the camera from water damage. Keep the camera strap around my neck in case dropped or continuously put camera away after filming.

LAPTOP

Potential Hazards & Safety Risks: When editing footage if the Laptops are bot carried with care they could be dropped. Any food or drink consumed around the Laptops could cause the computer to be damaged by water damage or getting food stuck in keyboard ect.
Example of safe working: I will insure that i carry the laptops correctly with care to prevent an accident. I will also make sure that i dont eat or drink  around any electrical equipment that i will be using.

Treatment

TITLE:
Life On The River Cam

MEDIUM:
The genre of this Documentary will be informative because once the documentary is at best it will give the viewers an in sight on the river from both positive and negative opinions from the workers.

RUNNING TIME:
5-10 minutes- 300secs+

SYNOPSIS:
The documentary will be based on The river cam mostly in the centre of town by Garret Hostel Lane. It will show many different weather conditions along with the workers life style during the day. The Documentary is based on the profit benefited by the river itself with tours of the river on a 'punt' (flat bottomed boat manually operated by a being) It will also include many different opinions from the punters and touts which are all formed around the river in hope to make a profit off of natures beauty, the river Cam.

LOG LINE:
The documentary explores the different weather conditions on the river and shows various opinions by its workers.

TARGET AUDIENCE:
My target audience could be viewed by a wide range of people from any background and any age because the Documentary will be informative and interesting; it will contain explicit language so will be suitable for older teenagers 15+

POTENTIAL DISTRIBUTION:
I hope to eventually distribute my short featured documentary into various Television Programmes which will be suited for the genre such as: watch tv, channel 4 (then be used on 4OD which will be appealing to those who use the internet more, as apposed to watching television) It will also be published on youtube which will help me keep track of the views and become more appealing to the younger generation. Will also be entered into the Cambridge Film festival in hope to be a winner and shown at a cinema in cambridge for the residents and tourists (will help publicity)

CONCEPT ART:
I will not include any set design ect. as I will be filming all interviews, cut aways and shots within cambridge city centre and on the river.

What is a documentary?

A documentary is a non-fictional motion picture intended to show viewers what is happening in the world. Video and digital productions can either be direct- to- video, made into a TV show or released to be screened in a cinema. 'Documentary' has been described as a 'film making practice, a cinematic tradition, and mode of audience reception' thats always evolving and has no clear boundaries.

My chosen idea for a documentary

In my personal opinion I think that each of my ideas for my documentary could potentially be very successful if I were to work hard and try my best to create the documentary. Having to chose one idea has proven difficult; I have to think about which idea would be more interesting to the viewer as apposed to which is my personal favourite. After thought I have narrowed down my final decision to two subjects: "The river cam" and "The life of me" Both of these ideas would include many different prospectives and opinions which i would think that the viewers would find more interesting than the other subjects I have exampled.

My 6 ideas for a documentary

- A story from your local newspaper
YEAR LONG CHARITY BIKE RIDE
Story: I'd start off the documentary as having Peter introduce himself and what he did for charity. Interview Peter Dudfield and ask him questions such as:
What motivated you to start raising this money for charity?
Why was it a 12 month bike ride that you decided to do? Why not a fun raiser event?
Were there any struggles while committing yourself to this event?
I'd then interview a worker from the Red cross international disaster fund which is the charity he raised £14,000 for.
Id ask questions such as: How will this now effect peoples lives? What will the money raised be used for?
I'd have a few shots of Peter Dudfield cycling and doing his everyday activities to show the viewers how natural his lifestyle is to encourage more people to raise money for charities.

- A person you know
A CHILDS MIND
As i have three younger sisters i think it would be interesting to show the public how a childs mind works. After seeing adverts such as: AT&T, Evian, Interview with a 1,2 and 3 year old (youtube hit)
It has inspired me to do a documentary on the childs mind. I will follow round a young child age 5-11 and analyse how a child lives their life in comparison to their parents. I will interview both child and mother/father by asking each of them questions such as:
If you had lots of money what would you do with it?
What do you think about poverty today?
What do you do in your spare time?
What do you think of the rules that your parent has put into place?
I'll then alter the questions that i asked to the kids and ask their parents. Then i will ask them questions about eachother to test how much they know and the way that they observe their day to day life with eachother.
Also i will ask them these questions in the same interview so the viewers can observe a conversation between generations.

-Investigating into your interests
BEARDS OF TODAY
I have chosen the topic of Bears which was inspired by the idea of fashion in the modern day. Men now and have always grown beards to create a fashion statement or improve their looks. I thought the best way to approach this subject is to interview people who I don't personally know so that lots of different opinions and cultures are shown to the audience. Also including fashion from the past when beards were popular and why. I will ask such questions to members of public (with beards) :
Why did you decide to grow a beard? What was your inspiration?
How do you maintain it?
How many of your friends have beards?
Also i will observe the conversations these people may have with the people with them to see what they think of the mans beard.
I'll create a chart which has the number of questions asked so that i can then show the viewers what is the most popular reason to having a beard.

-A place
THE RIVER CAM
This topic has particularly drawn my attention because I myself am a punter on the river cam. Although tourists see the river as a calm tranquil place, i want viewers to see the real river cam. My inspiration to this is obviously working on the river and a previous documentary called 'Punt wars' I'd like to show the opinions of the river: Tourists point of view, Punters point of view and hopefully the councils point of view as well.

-An issue
THE LOSS OF A LOVED ONE
I had this idea because i wanted to understand how peoples lives are affected by the loss of someone close to them and also how it affects their day to day lives. The documentary would have to be very careful and sensitive for the subject as to not cause distress. This idea was generated by a personal experience; i would like to find out how other people deal with this issue. I need to think more in depth about this idea and how to approach each subject as this idea would be highly emotional to the viewers and to the people interviewed.

-Autobiographical
THE LIFE OF ME
This topic would consist of many different environments and opinions. Such as: The river cam (Work) Longroad (My college) Mulberry house (My home) and the hobbies that i like to do in day to day life. I would start the Documentary by filming my Mum and Dad to show the viewer the opinion that those closest to me have. I'd then show my home life by observing arguments, happy moments and more events that take place within the household. I'd then film my travels to college and show the viewers the opinion of what my teachers and peers have on me. The viewer will then see the transition between my family that know me off the back of their hand and then a teachers view within a working environment.

Aileen: The life and death of a serial killer (2003- Nick Broomfield)

Nick Broomfield uses a series of techniques to portray the events that are shown about Aileen in the documentary.

The opening scene is silent with a picture of Aileen as a mere child. This is a good technique which Nick has used to dramatically affect the audience; they look at the picture of Aileen as a young, innocent child before any of the events took place  that then labelled her 'serial killer' The audience feels sympathy for the little girl in the picture. After this, it's then followed by the opening credits: her name 'aileen' in lower case with a bold font which almost looks hand written. The font is white on the matte black background which stands out and suggests that the documentary isn't about a serial killer, its about a person, a human being, like any other. The small writing then follows underneath the name " life and death of a serial killer" which again is used as almost support to the a name giving the idea that Aileen is more important than what has happened.

Throughout the documentary there are many different filming techniques used to get information across about Aileen to the viewers. One of these techniques used is taking the footage from several court appearances with Aileen and many other people involved within the case e.g. her previous attorney, Nick Broomfield himself. This shows the viewer exactly the happenings which were taking place throughout the life of Aileen. Note: Nick Broomfield has followed Aileen and her life since she was first convicted.

Another technique used is an interview within the Jail that Aileen was a prisoner with Aileen and Nick. Throughout the interview, although Nick is also within the room the whole time the camera is rolling, Aileen is the main focus so Nicks voice is heard asking the questions but you only see him once or twice throughout the scene. Not only is the camera focused on Aileen the whole time but it's also a zoomed head shot so that the audience can see her reaction to every question asked. This is very affective considering it creates tension with such a simple technique. Throughout the interview it switches over to another court scene which relates to what Aileen is talking about in response to Nicks question. A voiceover of a phone call is present which was taped by the police, the voice over is happening at the same time as the viewer watches the court scene. The audience doesn't know if the voiceover and the court scene is happening at the same time or not but the way that Aileen is responding makes you believe that it is; Nick could have edited different clips to make it look emotional.

Each technique that Nick uses, successfully impacts the audience and shows the events extremely well leading up to Aileens final penalty to a death sentence.
